Language Arts Reflection
Writing is an important part of life. Almost everything involves writing. If nobody knew how to write the world would be changed forever. Without writing there would be no books, movies, or TV. There would be no street signs so the streets would be dangerous.

This year in Language Arts I learned that in order to write a good essay you need to notice things in your world and create a bold statement. For example I wrote an essay about pet turtles. I wrote about them because I have two turtles, and I realized that they make good pets.

Another important skill is organizing your writing. In my essay about turtles making good pets I divided it into sections. The first section was an introduction, the second was about what they eat, the third section was cleaning, and the fourth was where you can get them and the cost.

In order to write a good essay you also need to write clear topic sentences. In the essay I wrote this year each of the sections I wrote had clear topic sentences. For example each of the sections had an opening sentence that talked about what was in the paragraph.

This year with everything I have learned I believe I have improved as a writer. I believe this because last year I hated writing because I wasn’t very good at it. Last year my longest piece was two pages and now I have a nine page story. The writing skill that I do the best is creating bold statements. The writing skill I need to improve is using connections.

Story:
Pet Turtles

I think turtles are really cool animals. There are about 300 different species of turtles and new ones are being discovered. Many of these turtles can be kept as pets, but the most common types of pet turtles are the Sliders. Sliders get the name “Slider” because of the fact that they are very fast turtles and can slide off of rocks into the water in a matter of seconds. There are many different kinds of Sliders. There are Red-eared sliders, Yellow-eared sliders, Caramel sliders, Mexican sliders, and Banded sliders. There are other types of pet turtles too like box turtles. Most adult turtles do well in ponds.

Turtles aren’t very picky eaters. If your turtle is a baby it will have to be fed little food at a time but fed more than twice a day in order to stay healthy, unlike an adult turtle which can just be fed in the morning and at night with larger quantities. Turtles will eat a large variety of foods. They will eat tiny chunks of meat, vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes, fruits like strawberries and small pieces of apples, and they will even eat live plants which can be planted in the bottom of your tank. They will also eat feeder fish, which are small live fish that you put in the water for your turtle to eat. It also makes your turtles more entertaining to watch. Some of these foods can only be given to older turtles though. One kind of food that works for any species of turtle, or age is Reptomin turtle food. You can buy this food for $3 for a small container $6 for a medium and $10 for a large.

Cleaning their tanks is not as complicated as you think. Turtles need to get their tanks cleaned at least two times a month. The tank needs to be emptied and refilled at least once every two weeks. At the end of a month or the beginning of the next month you need to empty their tank, clean all the rocks, clean the walls, and refill the tank. Emptying the tank takes about five minutes depending on how large you’re tank is, cleaning the rocks takes about twenty minutes, and refilling the tank also takes about five minutes.

You can get pet turtles in many places. Although pet stores in New Jersey don’t sell turtles you can get turtles in other states. You can also find turtles in ponds, lakes, and many other places.

Turtles aren’t very expensive animals. The basic baby turtle tank and everything in it costs $60, and depending on what kind of turtle you get the cost will change. The actual turtle is sometimes the most expensive part of having the pet.

All of these reasons are why I think turtles make good pets.
